There’s something about a farmhouse reading nook by a sunny window that makes you slow down before you even sit. Honestly, the sun does most of the decorating. In this corner, a big multi-paned wooden window floods the cream wall with soft morning light, and six botanical prints hang in a tidy grid above a rustic three-drawer desk. Start With the Sun: Positioning Is Everything

The very first thing to notice in this photo is the window. It’s large, wooden-framed, and has those cute divided panes that throw soft shadows across the wall around 9am. If you have a window like this, you’re already halfway there. If not, and most of us don’t, look for the brightest wall in your home and build your corner there.

I used to think you needed a huge, gorgeous window for this to work. Then I got stubborn and tested it with a regular windowsill and a cheap mirror angled across from it. The mirror bounced light around enough to fake the sunbeam effect, so that’s my first budget trick for any dim room.

The Botanical Prints Grid: A 20-Minute Wall Upgrade
